JUNE 15, 1983
The Tribes began advertising last week to fill 31 positions to be funded by money from the 1983 Emergency Jobs Act (the "Jobs Bill"). Word was received June 9 that the Portland Area office solicitor had reviewed the Tribes' plans for using the money and approved them.
Executive Tribal Treasurer Vern Clairmont said the Tribes had negotiated with the BIA to contract the Flathead

A year's worth of planning is about to climax. The Reservation-wide Pow Wow Committee announces that the 85th annual Arlee Celebration will take place this year from Thursday, June 30 (Camper's Day) to Monday, July 4.
This year's festivities boast an increase in prize money

July Quarterly
The year's third constitutionally mandated quarterly Tribal Council meeting—at which people are supposed to feel free to speak their minds to their leaders, although that's a right they can exercise each Tuesday and Friday—is set for Friday, July 1, beginning at 9 a.m. in the Council Chambers in Pablo.
Agency's portion of the $114.5 million Jobs Bill money allocated for reservation projects across the country. The negotiations resulted in the Tribes getting the go-ahead to administer roughly half of the Flathead $900,000 allocation. The remainder of the money will be used by the Flathead Irrigation Project.
The biggest part of the Tribes' contracted share -$295,000 - will go for construction and repair of 70 miles of fence on Tribal lands, Clairmont said. Forestry projects will be aided by the second largest amount Seventy-five thousand dollars is earmarked for timber stand improvement (insect and disease control), while $50,000 will go to maintain and upgrade about 12 miles of forest roads. Fifty thousand dollars will pay for creel survey work (accumulating information about Reservation stream use and fishing success) and some stream clearance and rehabilitation.
The jobs will last until each project is finished, perhaps as late as December 31 of this year, Clairincnt noted.
The Tribal newsletter received copies of the job announcements last week but the June 14 closing date for all 31 precluded our being able to help with the advertising.
