Camel retains USBA cruiserweight title in 'best fight ever'
For the first time in Marvin Camel's long boxing career, the Chur-Koosta is able to present a first-hand account of one of The Champs fights.
Rachel Bowers and Marvin Bourdon, members of our
print shop staff, attended the May 21st match in Billings between Camel and Richard "Rocky" Sekorski, Minnesota Bourdon photographed the action -- his first outing with our Pentax MR. Bowers does the reporting:
Marvin Camel's best fight since his win of the world title
Marvin and Rocky had words at the weigh-in. Sekorski said, "I'm going to come out smoking! I'm going to bring the fight to him. Camel's a south paw so I'll be moving to my left. I plan on banging on him early. I'll take him out in the sixth round."
Marvin's rebuttle: "The way he explains it, he'll come out and stay on my case! For a guy of his calibre and his experience, he'll be making a drastic mistake. It will be a good fight, but I hope it doesn't go over six. I have to get back and take care of my business in Ronan."
Just before fight time we were able to visit with Marvin in his dressing room. He wanted to know who paid our way over and we both let him know we went on our own. His comment was, "I'm glad someone affiliated with the Char-Koosta and the Tribes was able to attend."
Pictures were taken of Marvin and his brother, Kenny Camel, before we left them to prepare for the fight.
Marvin had his own Grand Entry with his beaded vest, eagle feather war bonnet and eagle feather staff, which was given him in honor of winning the world title in March of 1980. The crowd was brought to its feet applauding him, as he danced around the ring.
The first round was good The crowd and the judges were clearly in favor of Camel.
The second round at 1 minutes 56 seconds saw Rocky Sekorski go down to his knees.
Rocky took innumerable blows to the head and body through the remaining rounds. Near the end of the fifth round Sekorski could not do too much but keep his guard up and avoid Marvin's repeated blows. Rocky could take a good punch, but Marvin's experience in the ring showed everyone he deserved to win.
By the end of the 8th round Rocky knew he was defeated and gave the fight to The Champ.
Camel was in great shape both physically and mentally. The results proved it.
Sekorski shook hands with Marvin and left the ring with eyes and face swollen badly from the torturous blows he'd received.
Marvin Camel's victory put him at 42-5-2, and in very good spirits.
Taking time for his fans, he autographed pictures and score cards before returning to his dressing room.
