Landmark mission is seriously damaged by local man
ST. IGNATIUS -- A 26-year-old St Ignatius man, for reasons as yet unknown, caused over $15,000 worth of damage to the historic Mission Church here.
Shoreline rules expected soon
The first draft of regulations provided for under Tribal Ordinance 64A, the Shoreline Protection Ordinance, has been completed and is being reviewed by the appropriate staff. Upon completion of the review a second draft will be published for public review and comment for a period of fifteen days, anticipating completion of a final draft as soon thereafter as feasible.
The Shoreline Protection Board, being fully aware of the short construction season and the fact that construction during low water is preferred, is expediting the administration procedure in order to cause as little inconvenience as possible for all parties wishing to take advantage of the low water for construction, maintenance, or removal of structures on the south half of Flathead Lake, within the Tribes' Shoreline Protection Ordinance jurisdiction.
All applications for lakeshore construction are being accepted and processed as quickly as possible. The tentative implementation of the shoreline rules and regulations is scheduled for March 1, 1983.
Application forms and further information are available at the Tribal Realty Office at the Tribal Complex in Pablo (406/675-4600, ext. 441 or 416).
Douglas Matt was arrested at the church on the afternoon of February 2 shortly after four Missoula tourists saw him smashing statues and gouging frescoes (paintings on plaster walls).
The $15,000 damage estimate is guesswork, according to the Reverends Gus Schmidt and Ignatius Dumbeck. Some of the art may not be repairable.
The latest word is that the damage is probably covered by insurance. The church's Nebraska insurance company is contacting an East Coast art restorer, while an Illinois firm is studying photographs to determine whether or not the half-a-dozen smashed statues can be repaired If not, they may be replaced.
The damage included an alter table, candle holders, kneeler and lecterns, in addition to the broken statues and a 20-foot high mural that was gouged with a flagpole.

February holiday closures
Monday, February 21, will be a holiday for both the Indian Public Health Service — with one exception — and the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Pablo. Tribal offices will remain open. (Seems we traded Washington's birthday for an extra day to pow wow in July.)
The one exception is the IPHS pharmacy: it will be open for business as usual February 21, but it will close at 2 p.m. this Friday, February 18.
