Powerlines, powerboats, and pristine air
How does the Tribes feel about powerlines on the Reservation and powerboats on the river? Why is a local lumber mill in trouble over its smokestacks?
These were among the topics discussed by the Tribal Council last month.
The answers are: We do not favor BPA's Jocko Corridor plan; we might allow jetboats on the Flathead (otherwise known as the Pend cTOreille River); and the local mill isn't in trouble with the Tribes, but with the state.
The powerline issue was raised anew by a Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) announcement that two Reservation routes are still "viable options" for transmission lines carrying power from eastern Montana (Colstrip) to Spokane. The Tribes are against the Jocko route because it involves the Tribal primitive area. Opposition to the Hot Springs route involves interpretation of a 1950's lease agreement between the Tribes and the Bonneville Power Administratioa
A meeting about the issue was called in Arlee on September 29 (coverage of which will have to wait until our October 15 issue).
Don't forget:
The year's last quarterly meeting is today (Oct 1) in Pablo. It begins at 9 am. in the Council Chambers in the Tribal Annex in Pablo.
The 'jetboats on the Flathead (Pend d'Oreille)' proposition came September 17 when Bob and Judy Cameron met with the Tribal Council to toss around a few ideas. The Camerons, who hail from the Bitterroot area, are interested in conducting powerboat trips on the Flathead (Pend cfOreille) next summer. The trip package options include overnight stays in tepees along the river and bus tours of the Reservation following the water jaunt
Still very much in the talking stage, the plan certainly would involve money paid to the Tribes for permission to use the Tribal resource, plus some summer employment for Tribal members.
Herschel Mays, the Tribes' Wildlands Recreation director, is working on the details for presentation to the public and the Council.
Finally Oliver Dupuis met with the Council to ask why a Poison lumber mill is in trouble over its emissions. He said Reservation industries had been assured that reclassification to Class I air wouldn't affect them A year after that
