Good news, bad news
Budget goes down, but so might income
The Tribal Council voted September 10 to accept a $3.8 million budget for 1983's fiscal year, which begins October 1. The new year's figure is down over one million from last year's $4,861,694 budget.
That's good news for dedicated belt-cinchers, but there's bad news as well. The Tribes will realize about $5.8 million income by month's end. With lower interest rates and a still-unsure timber market future, the best expectation for 1983 is that Tribal income will be $5.4 million.
Two programs that were recommended for elimination by Executive Treasurer Vern Clairmont last month were

This year's final quarterly meeting will be Friday, October 1, at 9 am. in the Council Chambers in Pablo.
funded after all, though at lower levels, following a presentation by HRD head, Steve Lozar.
Lozar explained that he and his staff had carefully reviewed both the Summer Recreation and Summer Career Development programs and devised smaller budgets for each. Summer Rec, for example, could be run 33% cheaper in 1983 than in 1982, thanks to some serious staff cuts.
An interesting statistic was the percentage figure of money spent by each program. Lozar said the Summer Career Program uses 6/10 of \% of the total Tribal budget. Summer Rec gets by on a little less ~ 1/2 of 1%.
Perhaps what helped the most to sway the Council's decision towards re-funding the two programs was an impressive outpouring of public sentiment Several council-men said they'd each received at least a dozen letters in favor of the youth projects, and many more phone calls.
We hope to have a final version of the approved budget for the October 1st issue.
