Successful Elmo pow wow featured many local winners
Local Indian dancers fared a little better in Elmo last month than they did earlier in Arlee, as they danced away with about a third of the $5,000 prize money.
In Elmo, though, the biggest money is earned over at the stickgame pavilion. Fifteen hundred dollars was the prize won by first placers George and Bernice Hewankorn, Georgian Hewankorn Moomaw, Hazel Hewankorn, Laurence Kenmille, and Lydia Hewankorn.
The dancing and gaming took place July 15-18 during Elmo's 4th annual Standing Arrow Pow Wow. People from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Canada met at the north end of the Flathead Reservation to dance, drum, gamble and visit - the usual enjoyments of any pow wow.
Special added attractions were a rodeo (which drew contestants from Australia), a canoe race, and a softball tournament

Salish cultural leader dies
Mitch Smallsalmon, chief war dancer and keeper of the culture, died July 7 in a Ronan hospital, a week before his 82nd birthday.
A lifelong resident of the Flathead Reservation, Mitch was well known in Indian Country as a practitioner of traditional Indian ways. He was widely respected for this devotion to the old ways, and for his quiet manner.

mer's second big Indian celebration. Delores Alexander, from Cranbrook, British Columbia (Canada), will represent the Kootenai people at various regional pow wows for the next twelve months. First runner-up was Georgina Big Beaver, Elmo.
