JUNE 15, 1982
Flathead joins Northern CI
The Flathead Reservation's three-year-old application for designation as a Class I (pristine air) area was approved late in May.
Environmental Protection Agency administrator Anne Gorsuch signed the application May 24, in Washington, DC.
District meeting set for Mission
Five Tribal councilmen have joined forces to present a multi-district public meeting. Scheduled for Sunday, June 27, at 5:30 p.m., the meeting is being sponsored by Arlee's representatives, John McClure and Jim Steele, St. Ignatius' reps, Noel Pichette and 'Joe Dog' Felsman, and Dixon's lone councilman, Sonny Morigeau.
The organizers hope to brief, their constituents on what the Council's been up to since the last district meeting in March. They hope, too, that Tribal members will be assertive in asking questions about whatever's on their minds.
As an added enticement to attend the meeting, dinner will be served.
Mark your calendars now: "June 27,530, district meeting at St Ignatius Community Center".
yenne in pristine air club
Three days later, the redesignation order was published in The Federal Register.
Tribal Air Quality Director Bearhead Swaney said the approval was "a positive step for the Tribes" and for the people here.
He explained that the new classification will not cause hardship on area sawmills, industry or heavy construction projects. In fact, it could improve economic conditions here as it "enhances a growing tourism industry".
The Reservation joins another Montana reservation, the Northern Cheyenne, and the country's wilderness areas and national parks as Class I regions.
McDonald wins first round
The state of Montana held its primary elections June 8 and the Tribes' own Joe McDonald - college president, Doctor of Education, and former Tribal councilman - won a chance to be on November's general ballot. He's vying with incumbent Ray Jensen to represent District 25 (Ronan) in Montana's House of Representatives.
