VOLUME 10 NUMBER 14
NEWSPAPER OF THE SAUSH, PEND cTOREILLE AND KOOTENAI TRIBES OF THE FLATHEAD INDIAN RESERVATION, WESTERN MONTANA
NEW MOON OF CONTINUOUS SNOWS
Primary votes canvassed; no surprises
December 1,1981
Nineteen absentee ballots did little to change the results of the Tribes' historic first primary vote November 11. Twenty-four registered candidates and fourteen write ins were winnowed down to just two names for each of five districts: St. Ignatius - Joseph "Joe Dog" Felsman and incumbent Thomas "Bearhead" Swaney; Arlee ~ James H. "Jim" Steele and incumbent Louis W. Adams; Ronan - Robert McCrea and
Important Election Notice
You do not have to be registered for the General Election on December 12,1981.
If you are an enrolled Tribal member 18 or over who has lived on the Reservation for at least one year prior to the general election, you are eligible to vote.
Water rights deadline may change
On November 2, Montana's Attorney General, Mike Greely, petitioned the Supreme Court to extend the rapidly approaching water rights filing deadline from January 1, 1982, to June 30, 1983, "or to such other time the Court deems appropriate" but not beyond June 30.
People wishing to argue for or against the petition were invited to submit written comments by November 30. A hearing has been set for 9 a.m., December 7 (probably in Helena).
Specificallv left out of Greely's petition were claims in the Powder River Basin (in southeastern Montana).
Water rights holders should note that unless the petition's request is granted by the Court, the deadline for filing remains one month from now.
Frank H. Webster (incumbent Joe McDonald chose not to run); Poison - incumbent E.W. "Bill" Morigeau and Roger P. McClure; and Elmo/Dayton ~ incumbent Laurence Ken-mille and Al Hewankorn.
The ten preliminary winners will face the final test on December 12 when eligible Tribal voters again visit the polls (for the fourth time this year) to either change or retain almost half the current Tribal Council.
Polling places, open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., include:
