Secretarial election registration drive yields 627 voters
A small proportion of the Tribes' eligible voting membership will be entitled to go to the polls October 3 to decide two issues: Should the Tribal Constitution be amended to provide for primary elections for Council candidates? And should the Tribes withdraw from a concurrent jurisdiction agreement they've had with the State of Montana for the past seventeen years?
The Flathead BIA Agency reports that of 2221 registration forms sent to adult tribal member Reservation
residents last month, 849 were mailed back to the agency for certification. After testing each form for truthfulness and accuracy (and minus the 57 returned by the post office due to lack of a forwarding address), 627 people were deemed legally entitled to vote in next month's secretarial election.
According to secretarial election rules published in the CFR - the Code of Federal Regulations - 30 percent of the 627 registered voters need to show up and vote to make the balloting valid.
District meetings to explain secretarial election issues
A series of six district meetings has been scheduled to explain the October 3rd secretarial référendums: Hot Springs (bowling alley)~Saturday, September 26 Arlee (Salish Indian Seniors Center)~Monday, September 28 St. Ignatius/Dixon (St. Ignatius Com. Ctr.)-Tuesday, September 29
Ronan/Pablo (KHJCC Ree. Ctr.)-Wednesday, Sept. 30
Poison (tentatively scheduled for the old Catholic Church) -Thursday, Oct. 1
Elmo (Koostatah Hall)~Friday, Oct. 2
The meetings are being held to explain to the registered Indian voters a proposed amendment to the Tribal Constitution regarding primary elections. The 'pros and cons' of withdrawing from the 1964 concurrent jurisdiction agreement with the State of Montana will also be discussed.
All meetings will begin at 7 p.m.
September 26 is Native American Day...

Of these, 30 percent, which figures out to be 188 people in this case, a clear majority - 95 votes - will decide 'aye' or 'nay' on the two issues.
A list of the several hundred registered people has been posted at the BIA Headquarters in Rohan, and at the Tribal Complex in Pablo. Only those people whose names are on the list will be allowed to vote this particular time.
Polls will open at 10 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. on Saturday, October 3. Polling places are:
