Council Highlights
The June 26th Council meeting was short-both in duration and action. For those who want to know what happened anyway, in advance of the minutes, here's the scoop:
Oil & gas exploration-Some three hours were spent discussing Petro-Lewis Company's intention to explore on the Reservation. Dr. Al Spang, BIA Superintendent, addressed the Council about his concerns, then three company representatives gave details. The final agreement was debated a bit, then accepted unanimously by the Council.
Comprehensive Planning Committee-After lunch, two department heads were requested to serve on the committee. Needed is someone with a background in education, and one from the law & order field. No action.
Summer Rec. -received permission to close the gates at the 4-H campgrounds during the program's camp-outs.
Criminal Investigation: The Tribes want to contract this
Referendum vote
Eligible tribal members are reminded to cast their votes this Saturday (July 18) regarding whether or not the Northern Tier Pipeline Company should be allowed to cross the Reservation. See election notice on page 25.
Water conference postponed
The water conference scheduled for July 21 and 22 (see last issue) has been postponed. Rhonda Camel, one of the organizers, advises that the new dates are October 6 and 7. She's promised to keep us posted on further details.

TERS Board-Parents aren't noticeably willing to serve on the Two Eagle River School Board. Councilman Noel Pichette felt that the current recruiting system-where the tribal Personnel Dept. screens applications-might be at fault. He decided to speak to various parents in an attempt to drum up more participation.
The meeting adjouned shortly before 2 p.m.
Arlee Quarterly poorly attended
Attendance at the Arlee Quarterly was so poorly attended this year that the Council adjourned at 11:00 a.m. after two hours of business. Some of the major business handled was...
