Margaret Sanchez, Miss Flathead, Is Now Miss NCAI
Margaret Sanchez, Miss Flathead for 1980, recently added another banner to her collection when she became the first young woman from the Flathead Reservation to claim the Miss NCAI title.
Competing with 17 other contestants on the basis of poise, talent, speaking ability and knowledge of tribal customs and the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI), Margaret sang, danced and spoke into the hearts of the contest judges to earn the privilege of representing NCAI during the next twelve months.
The contest took place during the 1980 NCAI Conference held the last week of October in Spokane, Washington.
Margaret's duties in her new role will include speaking to students across the country, attending the mid-year NCAI meeting in Las Vegas next spring, appearing in numerous television commericials to publicize NCAI, and attending President-Elect Ronald Reagan's inaugural doings in Washington, D.C., in January.
A 1978 graduate of Arlee High school, Margaret, 19, attended the Montana State University in Bozeman before joining the Two Eagle River School staff as a secretary. She says she's really happy about her new honor, and is especially looking
Family Assistance Moves to Ronan
The Tribes' new social services agency, the Family Assistance Division (FAD), recently vacated their temporary Pablo headquarters.
The agency's new physical address is 2111 Main Street, Ronan (the trailer offices idea, mentioned in a past issue, obviously didn't pan out), next to the Ronan Pioneer shop. While awaiting a post office box in Ronan, FAD's mailing address
forward to meeting new people and seeing new places. Traveling, in fact, is one of her hobbies, along with sports of all kinds, horseback riding and war dancing. It was her talent in this last category, incidently, that helped her win both the Miss Flathead title this past summer at the annual Arlee Powwow, and the new Miss NCAI crown.
