NEW MOON OF THE WANDERING
VOLUME 9 NUMBER t£ / 7 PABLO, MONTANA 59855 JANUARY 1,1980
TRIBAL COUNCIL ELECTION
December 15,1979
Although competition was sometimes intense for Tribal Council seats from five districts sought by 35 candidates, four Councilman have retained their entrusted positions for another 4-year term in office.
Former Councilman Fred Whitworth, Sr. did not seek re-election in the Arlee District John McClure, retired, was elected to the post in a close race with Tribal Health Department Director, Kevin HowletL
An extremely tight race in the St Ignatius District between incumbent Noel J. Pichette and Joseph Felsman showed Pichette the winner by only nine votes.
The final tabulation of votes certified by the Elections Committee on December 18, showed that a total of 864 ballots were cast, including absentee ballots.
Tribal Council Chairman Thomas E. Pablo representing the Hot Springs District, received 427 votes. Pablo has been on the Council since 1972 when he was elected to fill the vacancy left by the death of Archie McDonald.
Victor L Stinger won his third term with 333 votes in the Pablo District and Elmer "Sonny" Morigeau received the largest vote of all candidates with 520 votes for a second term in the Dixon District
Two candidates withdrew from the race in early December. Alvin Sloan (from Pablo District) felt that "an employee appointed by the governing body should not serve on that body" (meaning the Tribal Council), and Douglas McCrea was planning on moving from Dixon to Ronan.
In addition to voting for five Council seats, voters turned down a proposal for a closed hunting season of big game animals be -tween January 1 to June 1 by a margin of 58 votes. A tribal ordinance presently protects big game female animals from February 1 to September 1 each year.
They approved two resolutions to continue the present management of two primitive areas, the South Fork of the Jocko River and Mill Pocket area in the Northwest corner of the reservation.
