VOLUME 9 NUMBER
NEW MOON OF THE WANDERING PABLO, MONTANA 59855
JANUARY 15,1980
Quarterly Meeting Sets The Tone for 1980: It's Going To Be An Interesting Year
The new 1980 Tribal Council got off to a running start this month by selecting itself an almost brand-new slate of officers.
The occasion was the first council meeting of the new decade - the first quarterly meeting for 1980, too -held January 4th at the Kicking Horse Job Corps Center recreation facility.
Opening ceremonies included remarks by Richard Whitesell, BIA Superintendent for the Flathead Reservation; the singing of the traditional Flathead flag song by members of the Flathead Culture Committee; and a prayer for guidance offered by Johny Arlee, who concluded by leading the standing-room-only audience in the Salish-language version of the "Lord's Prayer". (In the interest of accuracy, it might be noted here that maybe 10 people knew all the words...)
Chief Tribal Judge Don Dupuis capped off the official amentities by administering an oath of allegiance to the assembled council, then turned the meeting back over to Mr. Whitesell, who announced the first order of business - the election of new officers for the next two years.
The first piece of council action put Tom Pablo back behind the Chairman's podium, after a secret ballot vote saw him win 7 votes to sole opponent
Laurence Kenmilie's three.
Kenmille made a comeback, though, when he was elected Vice-chairman in what proved to be an interesting turn of events: when two sets of votes for the vice-chairman failed to find a majority winner (Kenmille and incumbent E.W. Morigeau garnered 5 votes apiece both times), Louie Adams suggested that the audience be allowed to choose.
The two hopefuls left the room for a brief moment and - despite the objections of one or two people in the crowd who felt that the entire eligible voting membership should be contacted for their opinions -a show of hands revealed Laurence Kenmille as the favorite for the job, by a twice-counted vote of 33 to 24.
The next item of business concerned the tribal secretary and treasurer positions as proscribed by the reorganization plan. Fred Houle, Jr., explains the procedure:
"In the past the Tribal Secretary and Tribal Treasurer have been appointed from outside the council. [This year, however, in line with the constitutional provisions] Vic Stinger has been appointed as Tribal Secretary and Joe McDonald has been appointed Tribal Treasurer." (Continued on Page 2)
COUNCIL CHANGES SCHEDULE
The Tribal Council voted December 28th to switch their regular council meeting dates around a bit. During the next three months, they will meet every other Wednesday instead of every other Friday.
The next regular meeting, then, is set for Wed-
nesday, January 23rd, same place, same time: the Council Chambers at the Pablo Complex, at 9 in the morning. Be sure to check the calendar we publish each month for the dates of future meetings, and for the various committees' meeting dates, as well.
