A RED LETTER DAY
Marvin's Number One
Two weeks after the big event, it's old news locally but still good news: Marvin Camel beat Yugoslavian Mate Parlov to win the first-ever cruiserweight championship of the world. . . a first for Montana and the people of the Flathead Reservation.
The day was March 31st; the place, Las Vegas, Nevada. The bout was a rematch for the new weight class, another 15-rounder, after the first contest for the title ended in a draw a few months ago.
Not so this second battle, though, described as "grueling, punishing, bloody and brutal" in half-a-dozen news reports. Marvin met a noticeably tougher Parlov this time, and fought 10 rounds before "asserting himself in the 11th round." One report claimed the taller Montana native nearly knocked his opponent in the 14th round, after which he received a serious cut above his eye. The injury wasn't serious enough to stop the nearly-over battle, however, and it went the full 15 rounds before a unanimous decision announced Marvin Number One.
