              S & K Electronics presents six-figure check to Tribal Council
The Tribal Council got to handle some big cash on the receiving end for a little while July 26, when S & K Electronics' general manager Jim Paro presented them a $173,734.25 check in payment of a Tribal loan.
"The loan isn't due until August," said Paro, "so we're actually paying it off a little bit early." He added that when this year is over, the company will be
almost worth what the Tribes has put into it so far.
"We used to sit up here and shudder everytime S & K came before the Council," said Poison district's Pat Lefthand. "Realizing [S & K] has gone through some hard times, Jim Paro has to be commended for doing a good job."
Paro has been the general manager for nearly two years. Under his management the company has made a significant comeback from a large deficit.
"I have to appreciate the guts the
Council had," Elmo district representative Laurence Kenmille said as he reflected upon past Council approval for more and more financing. "We could have sold it down the drain long time ago," he said. "It would have been easier."
Paro agreed, saying the last $550,000 the Council approved gave them some room to get into a comfortable position. He said the Tribal Council and the S & K board of directors should all be commended for their efforts.

Grizzly sighting prompts McDonald closure
The sighting of a four grizzly bears ~ a male, a female and two cubs ~ two weeks ago led Tribal officials to order McDonald Peak in the Mission Mountain Wilderness closed to humans, effective June 21.
Tribal Fish and Game has been monitoring the area since 1981. Closures have been ordered in five of the past seven years after bears, or signs of them, were noted, to decrease the chances of confrontations with humans. Wildlife biologists believe the area is an important pre-winter feeding site, attractive to the animals because of the large quantity of ladybugs and Army cutworms that hatch there every summer.
All trails to the area have been posted with warning signs. The closure is expected to remain in effect until sometime in September.
