»UMISHED BV CONFEDERATED SAIISH AND KOOTENAI TRIBES. FLATHEAD AGENCY. MONT.
y0] 4 — No. 4 June-July, 1960
William Walter McDonald St. Ignatius, Mont.
The above picture at left was taken many years ago of our last official Chief, Martin Charlo. Chief Martin Charlo, son of the famous Chief (Victor) Charlo, along with Chief Eneas Koas tah-tah of the Kootenais were recognized as principle Chiefs and their names were included in the Constitution of the Confederated Salish-Krotenai Tribes of the Flathead Re-organization Act. When these two Chiefs passed on their honor went with them. The picture at right is Chief Paul Charlo, honorary Chief of the Salish, who passed away a few years ago. Paul was a picturesque man who took an active part in Indian programs.

In aM respects the high school graduates h?.ve the preference because of going into higher education and in a few cases word was received that some students may have summer work. The disappointing factor is we do not have room for all trainees who apply nor do we have the money and the program is trotting larger every year. About five years ago the Council felt there was a need to acquaint our young students with office work, etc., in order that they
may go out and compete with our neighbors on jobs, with the cooperation of the Tribal Councilmen and the officials at the Agency we were able to carry on this Training Program.
We now have Miss Dianne Bagnell who has just been graduated from Stevens-ville High School to be added to the list of those going into higher education. This brings the number to eleven going to college and different branches of education. However, there are more 1960 graduates who have not regisistered with us who will further their education.
These young people are superivsed by different branches of the Agency office. Mr. Ed Faulkner, Haskell graduate in business training and Chief disbursing officer at Flathead, is going all out to have his staff give weekly progress reports on the trainees in order that a more clear understanding may be reached in helping these trainees to reach their goal.
We take off our hats to the Agency staff for helping make this program possible.
