Doug Allard Resigns
Doug Allard officially resigned as Tribal Secretary last month. In a letter to the Tribal Council dated February 14, the 47-year-old businessman said his doctor had advised him to quit because tension from the Secretary's job was proving detrimental to his health. He plans to concentrate on managing his St. Ignatius business interests.
Allard became Tribal Secretary in January 1978 through an appointment made by the just-elected, new Tribal Council . He held the post for almost 13 months until a "strokelike attack" hospitalized him with a temporary slight paralysis several weeks ago.
Fred Houle,Jr. Director of the reservation's Young Adult Conservation Corps, was appointed Acting Secretary during Allard's sick leave; he has since been asked to complete the 11 months remaining in Allard's two-year term. As of press-time, Houle hasn't said whether or not he'll accept the job -which by the way , he's eminently qualified for, since he has ten years' experience behind him: Houle was Tribal Secretary from 1968 to 1977.
