—Notice—
Due to the Disturbance and harassment of nesting geese on the Flathead River, the Tribal Council passed Resolution 5378 (under Ordinance 44B) on April 21st that:
1. The Flathead River be closed to motorized boats from April 15th to July 15th each year.
2. Notice of each year's closure shall be published in local newspapers.
3. Tribal Members apprehended motor-boating during the restricted time, shall be charged with a violation of Section 21, Confederated Salish and Kootenai Ordinance 36A (Revised).
4. Non-Tribal members found motor-boating during the restricted time, shall be turned over to the appropriate State or Federal Law Enforcement Official for legal action.
Lakes and Reservoir Closed
The following lakes and one reservoir will be closed for a short period. (1). Mission Dam: - from 4-26 to 5-17-1978
(2). St. Mary's Lake: - from 4-19 to 5-10-78
(3). Twin Lakes: from 4-19 to 5-10-78 (4). Rainbow Lake: opened 4-26-78 (5). McDonald Lake: 4-25 to 5-17-78 (6). Pablo Reservoir - 4-13 to 5-4-78
Flathead River Dam Projects
Public Forum Float Trip is scheduled for May 27th, 28th, and 29th.
The Forum is open to all who are concerned about the Flathead River and dam sites. This will be held at the old Flathead Agency Gym May 27th and is to last a full day starting at 9:00 a.m., a dinner will be served and at 1:00 p.m. the conference will continue and should be over by 5:00 p.m.
The agenda for the conference is: Two panel discussions-in the morning it will be on the effect of the dams on the Flathead Reservation and the special concerns regarding these dams. The afternoon panel will discuss the social -economic and legal implications of constructing dams. Between the two panels there will be workshops set up in sessions. The first session will be on education, fisheries and the Northwest Power demands and needs. The second session will consist of geology of the area, wildlife and threatened and endangered species, agriculture, philosophy and aesthetics.
There will be speakers from our reservation and other places to answer any questions that may come up.
The following two days (28th & 29th) the float trip will start at the Buffalo Rapids Two just below Kerr Dam in the morning around 9:00 a.m. Their first night stop will be in the Sloans Bridge area. The camp will be set up before they arrive.
Back into the water again to finish the float trip on the 29th.
This trip down the Flathead River is to show what areas will be flooded and the natural habitat that will be endangered. The trip will end in the Dixon area in the late afternoon.
