Miss Indian America Visits Reservation
Miss Indian America, Gracie Ann Welsh spent Good Friday (March 24th) visiting the Flathead Reservation and enjoying pot-luck lunch with members of the staff at the Tribal Complex in Pablo.
Gracie Ann was crowned Miss Indian America No. 24 on July 31st, 1977 at Sheridan, Wyoming. That date was also her 19th birthday, she said that the combination of the two events occuring on the same day still seems rather unique for her.
From Parker, Arizona she is a member of the Mohave-Chemehuevi - Yavapai tribes and enrolled with the Colorado River Indian Tribes. She has held several other titles before being crowned Miss Indian America. Some of these were Miss Indian Arizona from 1976 - 1977, Miss Colorado River Indians from 1975 - 1976. "Mesh-hi-hewah-ahote" is her Mohave name, which means Good Hearted Girl. Gracie Ann participates with much zest and enthusiasm in music, sports, rodeos and recommends the knowledge and practice of native culture as a means to enrich our total human experiance.
Studying public administration at the University of Arizona at Tucson, she plans on attending the University another three years.
Gracie Ann attended the Montana Indian Education Conference which was held at the University in Missoula. Director for Native American Studies, Henrietta Whiteman was Miss Indian America's chaperon while attending the Conference.
On commenting about the Confederated Salish and Kootenai members she had met on her short visit to our reservation she said she was impressed by their warmth and were good people. Gracie Ann would like to invite Tribal members to visit and be welcomed to the 25th Silver Anniversary of the All American Indian Days and the National Miss Indian American Pagent held on July 28, 29 and 30th at Sheridan, Wyoming. There will also be a Pow-Wow, parade, arts and crafts plus an all Indian Championship Rodeo.
