Four Candidates are out — No . . . They're in !
Dixon: Election time is usually confusing, and this year was no exception to the rule.
28 candidates have filed and after some discussion on the residency of four of them, all 28 have been certified by the Tribal Election Comm.
The four candidates who were briefly disqualified were: Lytle Gillin and Joe McDonald - Ronan district; and St. Ignatius district, James Morigeau and Harold Mitchell, Jr. All four had questionable residency, however, the Election Committee requested a legal opinion from D.C. attorney Richard Baenen, and were advised to certify three, ( McDonald, Mitchell and Morigeau ), and to hold a hearing on the fourth, Gillin. Mr. Gillin provided a sworn affidavit from a witness as to his residency since December 17, 1976.
Each candidate who applies must have physically resided not only on the reservation, but also within the district he is running for, for one year preceeding the election date of December 17, 1977. This means from Dec. 17, 1976 to Dec. 17, 1977.
Several members of the Election Committee feel their first decision was the correct one, however, said that they felt the attorney was better informed on the legal aspects of disqualification.
So now, confused or not, the final decision is left up to you on election day.
T.V. XMAS PROGRAM
The Tribe will be sponsoring an all tribal Christmas program to be televised again this year.
Johnny Arlee, a spokesman for the Indian Choir, told the Char-Koosta that this year's program will be taped at the St. Ignatius Catholic Mission church rather than in the studio in Kalispell. Filming will take place the evening of December 20, and the 30 minute program will be aired Thursday, December 22, at 7:00 in the evening. The program will be shown in Kalispell on KTVM, 6, and in Missoula on KGVO, 13.
Johnny said that the choir needs more participation from everyone throughout the reservation, so if you would like to be a TV star the choir practices every Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at the St. Ignatius church rectory.
There will also be a Christmas eve program of Indian music on the local radio station, KERR, in Poison. Time had not been set.
A NOTE OF EXPLANATION
In the last issue of the Char-Koosta there appeared an article on the Per-capita payment for December. The Char-Koosta headlined the article: XMAS PERCAPITA, which was not how the per capita resolution adopted by the Tribal Council designated December's payment.
Some members are confused as to the percapita holds being held out against one designated Christmas percapita. We apologize for the confusion. We headlined the article XMAS PER-Capita only because it is to be out before the Christmas holidays.
Hope you all have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and we are very sorry for the confustion.
