Melcher addressed the Poison meeting
Federal Assistance to Fight Indians?
United States Senator John Melcher explained to a crowd of approximately 1,000 people, most of whom were irrate non-Indians, that he has requested the U.S. Attorney General for assistance in helping Lake County in their legal battle over shoreline protection. Melcher stated if conflicts, such as this one, are not fully decided once and for all in the court system, that Congress has the responsibility to step in an enact legislation that will settle it.
Lawsuits filed by the Salish and Kootenai Tribes, attempt to check further development of the south half of Flathead Lake. One particular suit,
naming the Lake County Commissioners as co-defendents, is receiving a lot of attention. A public meeting was called last week by Senator Melcher to discuss Indian jurisdiction on the reservation.
Many people at the meeting voiced their concern over the recently enacted Tribal Shoreline Protection Ordinance, 64-A. Lake shore property owners refuse to recognize the tribe's legal jurisdiction over control of the Lake's development, and believe that a 64-A provision requiring a tribal permit to construct docks and wharfs below the high water mark, is a violation of their constitutional rights.
