POW WOW COMMITTEE EXPECTS RECORD CROWDS
Council Tours B.P.A. Facilities
From June 30th through July 4th, the 79th Annual Pow-Wow is anticipated to be the largest and outstanding ever. The Flathead Reservation Wide Pow-Wow Committee is working hard to ensure the success of this celebration at Arlee.
Many events and contests are scheduled in the 5 - day Pow-Wow. Due to an easier schedule , it is hoped that everyone will delight in viewing all of the celebration.
It has been stressed again this year, there will be absolutely no alcohol or drugs permitted on the grounds and violators will be asked to leave. Tribal Law and Order wHI search each person and car as they enter the grounds, and security precautions will be more stringent this year.
This year's Pow-Wow will honor "Blind Mose" Chouteau, who for 36 years has been head drummer in this annual event. He has been assisting the Pow-Wow Committee in reviving many old dances and songs. Some of our elder members have been practicing songs for the five or six dances that are being revived.
On Saturday, July 2nd, there will be a free feast for everyone starting at noon. Following this feast, the stick game tournament will commence and a prize of $1,000.00 will be divided among the top three teams. In addition, prize money over $3,000.00 will
also be awarded to winners of war-dance contest; along with a $250.00 purse for three drumming and singing groups.
The parade on July 4th sponsored by Arlee citizens and merchants, will have some changes in it's format this year. Several catagories are being changed to allow a greater number of participants to enter. The parade will get off as scheduled at noon July 4th, and will begin from the High School. The parade Committee has selected an honorary Grand Marshall, George Du-charme of Arlee.
Again this year, the celebration will include a M.R.A. approved Rodeo on July 3rd and 4th, starting at 1:00 p.m.
Six events includes Saddle Bronc, Bareback, Bull Riding, also Calf Roping, Steer-Wrestling and Ladies Barrel Racing. A $600.00 purse is being offered for the two-day event, and stock is being provided by Bob Schall of Ar lee. Admission will be $2.50 for a-dults, $1.25 for children and all under six are admitted free.
This year's 79th Annual Pow-Wow celebration will have something for everyone. Visitors from near and far will be joining us in our annual Pow-Wow; so let's all work together at the grounds to help make this a memorable occasion for ourselves and all who join us. OF THE FLATHEAD RESERVATION
Harold Mitchell, Fred Houle, Noel Pichette, Tom Pablo and E.W. Mori-geau, made up the committee that toured transmission facilities throughout the northwest on June 9-IOth.
The Bonneville Power Administration sponsored the tour and Ron Wilkenson from the Kalispell office of B.P.A. acted as escort for the committee members.
Departing from Poison; they made aerial observations of various dams, substations and lines enroute to their first stop at Dalles Port, Oregon. Viewing lower Snake River and Columbia river dams were part of the tour. In Oregon the group traveled by auto and air; observing a number of installations such as the Dalles Dam, Celilo Converter Station, John Day-Marion Lines and substations.
All members of the committee were very impressed by the Dittmer Control Center in Vancouver, Wash. This multi-media phenomenon and vast network controls more than 12,000 miles of transmission lines and over 330 substations of the Bonneville Power Administration through auditory and visual devices automatically triggered by computers; dispatchers are alerted in any emergency, enabling a quick res-sponse in controlling, confining and restoring lost service in the fastest possible time.
