Tribal Archives Now Reality
Dixon: ( Staff)
For many years the Tribal Council and individuals have instituted historical research on the Tribes of our reservation however, no one person ever said, " What are we to do with this information that we are accumulating ? " No one until now, that is.
Historical researcher, Bob Bigart, of Missoula, has worked with the Tribe and on his own for many years accumulating piles of information. Information which remained in folders and files, sometimes put into use for legal procedures; or in magazine and newspaper articles, but his dream all along was to make this information available to all the members and interested non-Indians of this area.
The Tribal Council is finally taking action to put Bob's dream into reality by initiating the Tribal Archives Project. The Council in conjunction with Bob and the Kootenai/Salish Cultural Committees, are laying down the ground work for a project which will organize and preserve all the historical data available pertaining to the Confederated Tribes of the Flathead Reservation. The Tribal Archivist will be hired on a permanent basis this year, and housing for the project may be found in a much needed Cultural Center, which the Council has also been discussing for several years.
The Archivist will receive training from Bob Bigart on the organization of the project, and jyill possibly be sent to the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C., for specialized training in preservation of historical documents. As the collection develops, much of the Archivist's time would be used in assisting users of the Archives. Users of the working Archives would be high school and college students doing research papers, local people -- both Indian and non-Indian -- doing research in local history and genealogy and Tribal and Federal officials who need to establish legal precedents and previous uses of reservation resources.
The Council has delegated the authority for formulating the program to the Tribal Education Committee, who will oversee the planning and operation of the Archives.
The position of Tribal Archivist will be advertised in the near future, and the Committee will be actively recruiting Tribal members for the position. If you are interested in becoming involved in this project, please call the Tribal Chairman or ^Secretary for more information at 246-3595.
