1,866 Register for 18-year old Vote • Council Election Nears
More Have Filed For Council
Dixon: As of last Wednesday, three persons have thrown their hats into the Dec. 15 Tribal Council election race.
The three are: Nadine Fels-man Allison, St. Ignatius District...Philip Paul, Ronan District ...and Francis Stinger, Poison District.
Seats in five reservation districts are open this year. They are St. Ignatius, Poison, Ronan, Arlee, and Elmo.
To be eligible for the Tribal Council, a candidate must be an enrolled member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes...must be 21 years of age ...and must have resided on the reservation and in the district to be represented for at least one year. Candidates must file their notice with the Tribal Secretary in Dixon at least 15 days prior to the date of the election (before 4 :30 p.m. on November 30)
However, candidates who wish to use the Char-Koosta to introduce themselves to the voters or outline their political views must file for office before November 2 and either call in or submit their statements to the tribal newspaper before November 6. Char-Koosta will give each candidate approximately one news column (about two double spaced typed or hand written pages) to present their position. This special profiles issue will be mailed November 15. A special elections issue, with all candidates listed and a review of voting laws and procedures will be mailed December 10.
Rules for the December 15 election will be approximately the same as the December 1971 election. All voters on the reservation will vote for one candidate from each contested district, or a total of five candidates....
