RESERVATION FORESTS CLOSED
Ronan: Extremely dangerous fire conditions in forests of the Flathead Reservation have forced a suspension of all forest uses.
Acting Agency Superintendent Lyle B. Baxter announced August 2 7 that the 4 0 0,0 0 0 acres of the reservation forest will be closed until further notice. He said exceptions to the order will be made by permit to persons living in forested areas, firefighters and forest managers and persons using
numbered highways and campgrounds ajacent to numbered highways. Application for permits may be made at the Bureau of Indian Affairs Office in Ronan.
Fire Control Officer Roy Montgomery noted the ban applies only to forested lands, not all lands on the reservation. He said most of the Flathead River and Flathead Lake will remain open and said most of the the valley lakes and reservoirs and the Jocko River up to r
the canyon will not be closed.
Montgomery said the order will be enforced on forested lands by forestry personnel, BIA agents, Tribal Law and Order and County Sheriff's Deputies. He said violations of the order could be a federal offense and urged all persons to comply.
Montgomery said that as of August 2 2, there had been 7 9 fires on the reservation forest this year. He said no fires (continued on next page)
