Valley Units Sells For $4.9 Million
Dixon (Char-Koosta): The
Evans Products Company of Missoula will begin eight years of logging operations on the immense Valley unit sometime early this spring.
The Evans Company, which has a particle board and ply wood plant as well as a lumber mill in Missoula, won a three hour, nickle-a-cnip auction in Ronan January 12 for the 8I.3 million board feet kitty. The final bid was $4,921,339.95. Three other local firms took part in the bidding (see chart at the end of the story).
The Evans Company held firm on the administrative floor bid for ponderosa pine with $60 per thousand board feet (the Tribal Council had upped BIA Forestry's assessed price for ponderosa from $48 to $60 per thousand). The auction was won by Evans' final bid on douglas fir and other species which was $60.65
per thousand $6.30 over the $54.35 floor the council had set on this timber category. The Evans offer nudged out Tree Farmer's Inc. of Missoula which stopped bidding at $60.60 per thousand on Douglas fir and other species. The Evans Company bid was approved by the Tribal Council January 19 by a vote of seven to three. Opposed to the measure were Council men Pat Left-hand. Elmo? Fred Whitworth. Arlee (who said he feared the high volume, long term cut might endanger game ranges and damage the Valley and Re-vais watersheds) and Tom "Bearhead " Swaniav. St. Igna-t!us (wno stated he was against long-term cuts for economic reasons). Supporting the acceptance were: Councilmen
James Ely. Ronan: E W Moi alson; Tom Pablo. H< Springs, John Malatare, Robert Mcuea. Dixon; Victor (cont. on page 8)

Court Denies Drop Of Trespass Charge
Missoula (Char-Koosta): Attorneys for Flathead Lake non member Harlan F. Pollman were denied motions to dismiss federal trespassing charges during a U.S. District Court hearing in Missoula last Friday.
Billings District. U.S. Judge W.J. Jameson denied the motion by attorneys Sam Haddon, Missoula, and C.B. McNeil of Poison. Judge Jameson also agreed to review briefs by Flathead Tribal Attorney Richard Baenen on the controversial
tribal recreation permit case.
Pollman was summoned to Missoula U.S. District court after allegedly fishing off Fin-ley Point June I. Charges of violating federal trespass laws were filed September 20 after a preliminary hearing at the Missoula Federal Courthouse.
Last Friday's hearing was held to listen to motions for dismissal. Haddon told the court that the federal statute Pollman allegedly violated does not apply to Indian reservations (continued on next page)
