Transcript	Permît Case in Court Caring for the Reservation Forests. Missoula—A case involving a non-member fishing on Flathead Lake without a Tribal Recreational Use Permit has finally gone to court. Harlan F. Pollmann, Poison, appeared in Federal District Court in Missoula Wednesday after receiving a summons Monday. The information against Pollmann was filed June 1. During an initial arraignment Wednesday, U. S. District Court Judge Russell Smith gave Pollmann and his Arrorney C. B. McNeil, Poison, 20 days to file a defense brief. The Tribes— technically the U. S. government—will then be given an additional 20 days to file a brief. The government's case is being handled by Deputy U. S. Attorney Robert Gannon. Pollmann was released from custody on his own recognizance. The preliminary arraignment was continued until sometime in November. The case is seen as a test of the Tribe's right to extend the Recreational Use Permit System to Flathead Lake. The complaint against Pollmann states: Willfully and going on land identified as—located in the N one half, Sec. 21, T23N, R19W, MPM Lake County, a portion of the Flathead Lake within the exterior boundaries of Flatehad Indian Reservation belonging to the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Indian Tribes for the purpose of fishing theron, contrary to provisions of 18 USC Sec. 1165. There is something both sacred and secular about the nearly 450,000 acres of reservation forests. The forest today is generally seen as a source of tribal income but in the past it was com- fortable sanctuary, a generous provider and a rich source of culture for the Salish, Kootenai and Pend'd Orielles Indians. The thickly forested hill-homeland of the tribes provided security from the raids of hostile neighbors. Representatives of the Tribal Council, (for a complete list see Montana Power monies story in next column,), Reservation Bureau of Indian Affairs Superintendent Harold Rober-son and Kicking Horse Job Corps Manager, Wayne Hamel met last week with Labor Department negotiator Sanford Conn. After a day-long negotiating session there was approximately $100,000 difference between what the Tribes felt they need to run the center (Continued on Page 7) Indian Commissioner Okays Distribution Washington, D.C.—Indian Commissioner Louis Bruce has told a delegation of Tribal officials that he would approve 100 percent distribution of the Montana Power rate adjustment monies. The delegation—Tribal Councilmen Tom Pablo, Hot Springs, Pat Lefthand, Elmo, Tom "Bearhead" Swaney, St. Ignatius and E. W. "Bill" Morigeau, Poison ' Tribal Secretary Fred Houle Jr. and Flathead Bureau of Indian Affairs Superintendant Harold Roberson—met Bruce on the controversial distribution plan last Friday in the nation's capitol. Bruce at first offered to approve the total payout but (Continued on Next Page) BIA Employment Takeover: No Problem Washington, D.C.-A Tribal delegation was told in Washington last week that there would be "no problem" in bringing about a turnover of Bureau of Indain Affairs Employment and Education posts to the Tribes. BIA Employment Assistance Official Albert Trimble met wi- th Councilman Tom (Bearhead) Swaney and Flathead Reservation Superintendent Harold R-oberson about the proposed takeover.
