Special restrictions on Reservation mandated by extreme fire danger
Due to the continued lack of rain on the Reservation, the risk of wildfires remains very high. With no relief expected any time soon by weather-forecasters, the following activities are forbidden, beginning Sept 9,1988:
1. Building, maintaining, attending or using a fire or campfire. This includes charcoal-type fires, but excludes self-contained liquid fuel stoves.
2. Using an explosive.
3. Smoking, except in enclosed vehicles, buildings or places of habitation.
4. Operating in dead, down materials (piling).
5. Operating or using motorized vehicles such as, but not limited to, cars, trucks, trail bikes, motorcycles, and all-terrain vehicles (ATV's) off of regularly
used forest roads. Skidding operations subject to rule #7.
6. Firewood cutting or post-and-pole cutting for personal use.
7. Mandatory "hoot owl" woods operation will remain in effect until rescinded. All felling, bucking, and skidding between the hours of 1:00 p.m.

Memorial statue visits Reservation this week

A statue commemorating the men and women who spent all or part of their military career in Vietnam will be on the Reservation this week as part of its tour of the state. Here's the schedule:
WEDNESDAY, 9-14 (today) — Super 1 Foods in Poison until maybe 6:30 p.m., when it will go south to the
Tribal Complex in Pablo for a 7-9 p.m. stay and a brief ceremony.
THURSDAY, 9-15 — Mission Mart in Ronan all day; St. Ignatius Long-house from 7 to 9 p.m.
FRIDAY, 9-16 — Doug Allard's Trading Post on Highway 93, all day;

Last call for the Stevensville Pilgrimage
The annual Stevensville Pilgrimage, a day for the Salish to pay tribute to their ancestors who lived in the Bitter Root Valley and welcomed the first Jesuits, will be held Sunday, Sept. 18. A noon mass will be held at the St. Mary's Mission, followed by a feast and wardance. The Salish Culture Committee will provide rides for anyone needing transportation.
