MONTH OF CELEBRATION DANCES
Hundreds turn out for Tun without alcohol1 gathering in Arlee
"It was like a big family picnic with kids ages 2 to 90 playing stick game and telling stories " THD Alcohol Component director Anna Whiting-Sorrell said of the second annual Celebration of Sobriety that took place June 24 and 25 at the Arlee pow wow grounds.
Approximately 500 people showed up throughout the two-day celebration to play horseshoes, softball, volleyball,
stick game and cards. The celebrating was for the commitment many people have taken up toward staying sober.
Whiting-Sorrell says it couldn't have turned out better. "I think the hardest thing for adults to do is be comfortable having fun while they're sober," she said. Whiting-Sorrell says she is grateful to the Chief Cliff Singers who provided singing throughout the day. "They added a real nice touch," she said.
When the games finished up Saturday afternoon, the Alcohol Component presented three special awards to people who have contributed to the goals of the program. Mary Herak of the St Ignatius School's CARE program was recognized for her work in preventive programs for the schools, her leadership role in S l Ignatius, the "Here's Looking (Concludes on page two)

Meeting to include protest demonstration
The annual meeting of the Kootenai-area Indian council is set for July 12 at Edwards Lake, seven mites north of Eureka, Mont, according to Elmo Council member Laurence Kenmille.
On the agenda will be discussion about continuing problems between government officials and Native Americans wishing to cross the 49th parallel — otherwise known as the Canadian border. "It's not a problem with just Montana tribes, but with tribes from the Pacific coast to New York," Kenmille said.
Part of the meeting will be a protest demonstration by participants at the traditional crossing place, which is different from the official one, Kenmille said.
Contact him at the Tribal Shoreline Protection office in Pablo for more details.
