New IHS eligibility rules may be delayed an extra six months
Indian Health Service eligibility-tightening rules due to go into effect in March may be delayed for six months so further study can be made about the impact of loss of federal health care on certain groups of Indians, such as handicapped children.
Before recessing for the holiday season, the Senate voted to impose a six-month delay on implementation of the eligibility policy so Indian tribes could
".. .seek clarification... of the eligibility of (certain) groups of Indian patients now under the care of the IHS that the final rule fails to address", in the words of Daniel Inouye, chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Indian Affairs, quoted in an article in a recent edition of the National Indian Health BoardHealth Reporter.
"We've heard about it, that it was attached to the 1988 Interior Appropriations bill," Tom Keast, Flathead IHS
service unit director, said recently. "We haven't heard any official confirmation about whether or not it's been approved by the full Congress yet, though."
Senator Inouye's remarks were directed at a final rule issued by the Dept. of Health and Human Services on Sept. 16, 1987, wherein an Indian or Alaska Native must be a member of a federally recognized tribe and reside within a designated health service delivery area (Continues on the next page)

Employment list update
The Job Training Office is currently in the process of updating the Construction Employment Listing for the Tribes.
The construction listing is used to provide area contractors with the names of individuals who are skilled in all construction trades.
Applications are available to all interested persons at the Job Training Office, located in the Family Assistance Building in Ronan. Applications are due by January 22, 1988.

Calendars honor Kootenai veterans
The Kootenai Culture Group has 1988 calendars for sale that have been dedicated to Kootenai veterans. Selling for $3.00 each, the calendars are available at the Culture Group's offices in Elmo, or call staff members
at 849-5541 (area code 406) to place an order — mail orders need to include an extra 75 cents for postage. The calendars may also be purchased at Char-Koosta Printing, east of Pablo on Highway 93.
