Good-sized crowd watches swearing in, officer selection at quarterly
PABLO — Mickey Pablo of Hot Springs was unanimously chosen by his fellow Council members Jan. 1 to be Tribal Chairman for the next two years.
Unlike his selection to serve in that post throughout 1987, which was the result of nine or ten secret ballots over the space of a few hours when the Council couldn't choose between him and Ron Therriault in January of1986 (the two split the term, with Therriault get-

ting the nod for 1986 and Pablo taking over in 1987), the 1988 selection process took only a few seconds.
In what was the "new" Council's first official action, Pablo was nominated for the job and then automatically selected when nominations were closed.
The same thing happened for the selection of the other three Council officers: Sole nominee Fred Matt (St. Ignatius) was unanimously voted in as vice-chairman; Bob McCrea (Ronan) was unanimously selected as Tribal Council Secretary; and Sonny Morigeau of Dixon became Tribal Council Treasurer.
Elected as sergeant-at-arms was Ber-nice Hewankorn, chosen from a field of 16.
The first order of business at the January 1988 quarterly, though, was the swearing in, by chief Tribal judge Don Dupuis, of the five men who won the December general election. (The sixth winner, Floyd Nicolai, was sworn in at
the first Council meeting following the Dec. 12 balloting, because he was stepping into a term left vacant by a resignation.)
Following statements by all of thanks for election support and good wishes for the upcoming new year, the meeting was opened to comments from the audience, which numbered close to 100, in spite the day being a holiday.
Former Council member from St. Ignatius Ron Therriault started things off with a statement about the year-in-review reports that were appearing in the Reservation's three local newspapers — reports that gave a lot of attention to the Tribes' stronger stands on jurisdiction in 1987. While he mightnotbe in the news as much as before, people needn't think the Tribes will be going back to the "good old days when the Indians were quiet", he said. "We know we're strong because people are taking shots at us now. They fear power."

Moose permit reminder
The Tribal Fish and Game Conservation Dept. reminds all Tribal hunters that their 1987 moose-hunting permits expired Dec. 31, so they have to get new ones for 1988. This can be done in person at TFGC's Pablo offices or by mail, advises Carole McCrea, if the applicant knows his or her Tribal "i.d." number. Call 675-2700, ext 517, for more information.
