"Individuals striving to achieve alcohol-free lives" could almost be the theme of Reservation residents for the last couple of years, and joining that theme is a group of about 20 teenagers from the Elmo/Dayton area who have formed a club to conduct activities and learn to make "informed decisions" about drugs and alcohol.
The Elmo Youth Group, guided by parents — Lydia Hewankorn, Geris Saloway and Diane Michel—is raising money and planning activities to "keep the kids off the streets at night" and allow them to do activities outside of school that do not involve the use of alcohol and drugs. "We want to help them have a better understanding of drugs and alcohol so they can make informed decisions when they're faced

The group made its presence noticed at the Elmo/Dayton district Meet-the-Candidates forum Nov. 4 where they auctioned off each member to do four hours of work for the highest bidders. The bidding was wild and competitive. The highest-paid young man was James Big Beaver whose chore-services were won by Cathy Hamel for more than $50. The auction netted approximately $400 for the youth group.
Other activities organized by the busy youngsters were a Halloween haunted house, which was open to the entire community, and a Thanksgiving dance for the youth. The admission to the dance was a non-perishable food donation that will be used for Christmas food (Continues on page two)
