Winning students bring honor to SKC at AIHEC conference
Salish Kootenai College students fared very well at the 6th annual AIHEC conference in Missoula April 13-17. They took 40% of the outstanding student awards, and won two competitions — the conference "princess" and the academic college bowl.
Chosen by the AIHEC student congress as outstanding students of the year, based on academic achievement, extra-curricular activities and number of awards, were Judy Gobert,
JoAnn Kuntz, Windy Bourdon, and Margie Seaman. Six students from other colleges were so honored as well.
Malissa Vanderburg was selected as the conference princess.
And the winning SKC academic college bowl team included Bourdon, Kuntz, Gobert, and Vanderburg.
Mary Taylor, an SKC instructor who served with Doug Morigeau as one of the conference's two main coordinators, said between 400 and 500 people attended the week-long event, held at the Sheraton Hotel.
Most of AIHEC's 23 member Tribal colleges sent representatives, with some coming from as far away as Arizona and Kansas. (AIHEC stands for the American Indian Higher Education Consortium, which is made up of Tribal colleges from nine states and Canada.)
The conference featured a large variety of activities: workshops, film showings, arts-and-craft sales, school displays, luncheons and banquets (and a steak fry in Pablo), foot races, a juried art show, nationally known speakers, a dramatic presentation, various competitions, the choosing of conference royalty, and a pow wow that was experienced vicariously by the Sheraton's third-floor guests.
Taylor said she was very proud of SKC's showing at the conference — for the awards earned by the students and their over-all comportment.
Winning the academic college bowl was quite an achievement, she said. SKC's team prevailed over eight other teams, correctly answering the most questions about Native America.
