Bitterroot
National

in
western
Montana
.
Findings
are
based
upon
study
of
nearly
900
individual
fire
scars
on
living
trees
, and on
age-classes
of
shade-intolerant
tree
attributable
to
fire
. This
study
of the
forest
fire
history
in the
Bitterroot
Valley
identifies
fires
dating
back
into the
17th
century
. The
study
includes
some
comments
about
the
use
of
forest
fires
by
Indians
in the
Bitterroot
Valley
before
the
arrival
of the
whites
.
