Description	Presents frequencies, intensities, and influences of fire on stand structure and composition of the Bitterroot National Forest in western Montana. Findings are based upon study of nearly 900 individual fire scars on living trees, and on age-classes of shade-intolerant tree attributable to fire. This study of the forest fire history in the Bitterroot Valley identifies fires dating back into the 17th century. The study includes some comments about the use of forest fires by Indians in the Bitterroot Valley before the arrival of the whites.
