Description	Past western spruce budworm (WSBW) activity in western Montana Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii [Mirb.] Franco) forests was assessed through radial increment analyses of cores extracted at diameter breast height. A growth function, defined as the cumulative sum of squared mean annual radial increment, was graphically compared between WSBW host (Douglas-fir) and nonhost (ponderosa pine [Pinus ponderosa Laws.]) trees. Negative inflections of host radial growth curves relative to nonhost indicated WSBW activity; these inflections were quantified and transformed to a severity index that represents the intensity of the WSBW activity. A hazard index may reflect effects of WSBW activity to regeneration probability. Acceleration of nonhost ponderosa pine radial growth during WSBW activity in mixed Douglas-fir stands was observed.
