STATEMENT OF SENATOR MIKE MANSFIELD
In recent years there has been increased concern about
the problems of our environment. This new awareness of air and
water pollution has a generated public outcry for control measures
and a massive attack on the sources of this pollution.
The State of Montana has been rapidly assuming its role in
establishing control and regulation measures. Montana has more
than its share of these environmental problems and they come at a
time when the State is making a determined effort to expand its
economic base. Environmental control and economic development
can come at the same time with proper surveillance.
The Governor's office and other State officials have indicated
a desire to see that a proper set of priorities is established. 1 compliment
the Montana Land Board in insisting on necessary assurance
from the Anaconda Company in conjunction with its plan for developing
mineral resources in the Lincoln area. We need and can have new
industrial development in our State, and 1 believe it can be done without
jeopardizing the State's environment. It is with these thoughts in mind that
1 sent the attached letter to the Members of the Land Board.
