This morning, I had an hour and a half breakfast meeting
with Secretary of State Dean Rusk and Secretary of Defense Robert
McNamara, at which time we discussed the report to the President
on the thirty-seven day mission just completed .
We went into impressions arrived at on a country by country
basis. Many questions were raised and the conclusions of the repor t
were also considered in some detail . It is anticipated that further
consideration and analysis will be given to the findings by the
appropriate officials of the Executive Branch .
In addition to the discussion of the conclusions of the
report on Vietnam and related questions of foreign policy, the
Secretaries were advised that the Senate mission was received
with courtesy and consideration in every country which was visited .
The conversations with officials - both our own abroad and those
of the other nations - were invariably frank and informative .
Ther e is a r eservoir of good will for the United States
in most of these countries , even as there is a deep anxiety ove r
the conflict in Vietnam. Generally speaking there is a great
desire for the restoration of peace in southeast Asia, even if
the path to its achievement has yet to be delineated .
This was a fact - finding mission. Our purpose was to look,
to ask, to listen and to report . A report has now been made to
the President and the Secretaries who are most concerned with the
problems involved .
