Statement of Senator Mike Mansfield (D., Mont.) in
Regard to Secretary Dullea's Attack on McCarthy Radio Speech
(Given to AP and UP- December 1, 1953)
I think that Dullea showed he understood the responsibilities
of his office and America '• responsibilities as the leader of the free
nations of the world. It is one thing to talk about and berate our
foreign policy and another to actually make it and carry it out. The
times call for unity of action on the part of all Americans -- regardless
of party -- and the cooperation of free men everywhere to withstand
the menace of Communism confronting us today. I agree with Dullea
that we do not want satellite partners but nations who, on their own
initiative, will continue to build up the defenses of freedom, a better
understanding among peoples, and a mutual recognition of the self-respect
inherent in our concepts of liberty •
