Library Website Usability Study Presented

22 July 2009 by Barry Brown

A group of Mansfield librarians were able to present the results of the usability study which was completed just this past spring. (You may remember the red “!” icons that were on the library’s website recently. This was part of that research.)

The poster presentation is available as a PDF document. [1.6 MB]

Session abstract:

The Researcher’s Journey: Scholarly Navigation of an Academic Library Website
One of the most difficult problems facing academic librarians is knowing how scholars approach the library web site when they have a research question: what navigation paths do they take, what resources do they consult; and where are they at in terms of their research? The answers to these questions have the potential to guide the development of a successful library website design. The University of Montana Mansfield Library conducted a usability study analyzing the research process of both undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty. The goals of the project were to determine how the library web site fits into the University scholar’s research process and to what extent does the library’s newly redesigned website fulfill that research need. The study analyzes the use of the website by library researchers to identify any obstacles that might need change and guides future directions as the website continues to grow and improve. This session presents findings to the study in both a poster and in handouts. The findings will be relevant for academic libraries specifically, and for anyone who manages a library website. The study will help to guide the University of Montana Mansfield Library website as it continues to grow and improve.

Stay tuned as a more detailed report will be published shortly.

This of particular interest to me because I am working on a project which will be evaluating the usability of a digital library at the University of Edinburgh.
I would be very interested to read the detailed report when it is published.
I tried to download the poster PDF but the link does not appear to be working.
