News Database Trials

26 January 2007 by Samantha Hines

We are trying out some news databases in the library for which we would very much like feedback.  They are:

ProQuest Historical Newspapers: New York Times — The complete New York Times from 1851-2003 (exempting freelance articles per Tasini). Articles are displayed as they were printed in the issue, and ephemera such as classified ads are included.

New York Times Image Edition — an exact digital reproduction of the printed edition, with keyword searching and ability to browse the full publication. All pages, including advertising, photos and graphics are included. Only the current day’s issue plus Sunday is available.

PressDisplay — sixty days’ worth of content from over 100 international and US newspapers. There is a strong focus on international content in this database, and content is reproduced as it appeared in the paper without translation, and includes ads, photos and graphics.

These databases are all available via the library’s database trial page:

Please let us know in the comments what you think of these potential additions, or if you have any questions.

For those who were interested–we ended up subscribing to the New York Times Image Edition (daily electronic delivery of the current New York Times) and PressDisplay (daily electronic delivery of international and major national newspapers). We are attempting to find funding for ProQuest Historical New York Times–it was very popular but it has a $58K startup cost. Please feel free to pass along any questions or recommendations!
