Railroad
Pamphlet Collection

The railroad pamphlet collection contains a wide variety of materials that deal with the development, maintenance, and labor issues of the railroads in America. The collection is divided into two series: the first includes materials dealing specifically with unions , and the second contains non-union materials. The collection consists of 58 boxes.

Materials in the Union series date from the early to late 20th century. Most of these materials once belonged to Francis D. Tuffley, who was a general chairman of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen (BRT) in the 1950s and 1960s until the BRT became a part of the United Transportation Union (UTU) in 1969. Upon the union merger, Tuffley became a Vice President of the UTU until the 1980s, and he remained active in the UTU until his death several years later. Most of the items in this series deal with the internal workings of the railroad unions.

Materials in the Non-Union series range from the 1800s to the late 20th century. The oldest materials in this collection deal with land exploration, land purchases, and the building of railroads in the West. The later materials in this collection range in topic from promotional materials to legal documents and equipment lists.

This collection was processed, and its finding aid created, by Jessica Bush in Fall 2007 and Spring 2008.
