Pamphlet Collection

This collection of pamphlet, magazine, booklet and book-length literature, including maps, posters, and cartoons dealing with political issues of the First World War has been organized alphabetically by country of origin or subject of what is generally propagandistic literature. Unless otherwise indicated, each line description below refers to a single folder. Note should be taken of a few peculiarities of the scheme of organization. General literature refers to information of a general nature associated with a country. Miscellaneous literature refers to assorted data of a specific nature relating to a country. Note that entries exist for Europe and for the Middle East. The former contains information relating to the Versailles settlement of 1919. Fascist propaganda during the late interwar period will be found scattered throughout this collection under the appropriate country. Note also that atrocity literature has been grouped under the subject country of the allegation rather than its source; e.g., atrocities alleged by or against Germany would be found under Germany, unless the alleged atrocity occurred in a specified country, which then would become the subject, such as German atrocities in Belgium.

Other propagandistic literature of a similar nature may be found under its source if the subject is primarily of national concern to the originating nation, such as a national issue like the wartime Spanish elections in which Spain's neutrality was a political issue. Because of the peculiar role played by the United States before and after its entry into the war, an extensive literature exists concerning this country's relations with other nations. For this reason and because World War I was and is an issue of debate in American history and politics, some pamphlet literature ordinarily placed with the subject country has been grouped under U.S. "international relations." It is hoped that this will assist the efforts of U.S. history researchers more interested in tracing causes and effects of American propaganda intended for an American readership.
